da leao: Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has revealed to Canal Football Club that he came close to joining Everton in the summer.
What’s the word?
da betway: It is no secret that Ronald Koeman was on the hunt for a striker during the transfer window following the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United.
Everton re-signed Wayne Rooney and brought in Sandro Ramirez, but neither have been prolific in front of goal.
The Merseyside outfit have struggled to find the back of the net having scored just four times in seven Premier League matches.
Giroud was one name who was linked with a switch to Goodison Park after dropping down the pecking order at Arsenal.
Now, the Frenchman has confirmed that he considered joining Everton.
The 31-year-old told Canal Football Club:
“I had the opportunity to leave. I was very close to another English club – Everton – but I think I made the best choice.”
What does this say about Everton?
Well, considering that Giroud remains a regular substitute at Arsenal, it is not hugely encouraging for the Toffees.
After splashing more than £100m on new players in the transfer window, Everton made it clear that they are working towards challenging the top six.
However, after picking up just seven points from a possible 21 in the top flight, the Merseyside outfit are not displaying that message.
In order to become one of the elite Premier League clubs, they need to be able to attract top players.
With that being said, Giroud’s decision to reject regular first-team football questions whether Everton sold him on their plan.
The striker is yet to start a league game for the Gunners having made seven substitute appearances and scoring one goal.
