Everton are reportedly eyeing a deal for Kieran Trippier, but the Toffees would be repeating a grave error by signing the Tottenham right-back.
What’s the story?
According to The Daily Mail, Everton are eyeing a £20m swoop for Trippier, with the north Londoners expected to pursue Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.
The arrival of Wan-Bissaka would effectively end Trippier’s time as a starter for the Lilywhites, and the report claims the Toffees are ready to offer him a way out.
Seamus Coleman has not been at his best for quite some time now, but Trippier is hardly even an upgrade.
Not even an upgrade
The first mistake the Toffees would be making is assuming Trippier is actually better than Coleman, because they both present the exact same problem.

Both full-backs are excellent in attacking positions, but lack the engine, positional awareness and speed to fulfil those attacking requirements without sacrificing defensive responsibilities.
Coleman is just not athletic enough anymore to bomb up and down the wing for 90 minutes, as is required from modern full-backs, so why pursue another player with the exact same issue?
Brands repeating the old guard’s mistakes
This move should also worry Everton fans as regards to the operations off the pitch, as it shows a complete lack of understanding of past mistakes.
Believe it or not, the Toffees actually have a bigger net spend since the 2014 summer transfer window than arch-rivals Liverpool, and most of their signings have underwhelmed.
Splashing out £20m on a 28 year-old who is getting progressively worse rather than better would be yet another incredibly short-sighted move from the club.
If these are the types of signings Marcel Brands intends to make, he may not be the transfer guru fans hoped he was after all.
