Liverpool have had their fair share of injury concerns over the Premier League season so far, and an update has emerged which will surely frustrate Jurgen Klopp ahead of his team’s return to action later this month.
What’s the latest?
According to reliable Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Luis Diaz will undergo surgery to repair damage to his knee sustained during the club’s recent trip to Dubai.
Late on Friday night, Sierra tweeted: “Luis Díaz will undergo surgery tomorrow to recover from the lateral collateral ligament injury in the knee”
“#Liverpool expects the Colombian to play again in March”
It’s a huge blow for Klopp
Considering that Diaz had only just returned to training for the Reds, there is no doubt that the latest injury concern to the Colombia winger will be a huge blow for Jurgen Klopp as the manager prepares for the second half of the season.
The talented Liverpool ace had been out of action with a knee injury since early October, which has certainly contributed to the team’s struggles in the top flight alongside the long list of players who have sustained injuries over the campaign so far.
The Merseysiders are currently sixth in the Premier League table after a string of inconsistent performances, and having Diaz back in the team would’ve given Klopp some much-needed energy and depth in the forward line, with Diogo Jota also sidelined.
In eight league appearances this season, the 25-year-old Colombian has scored three goals, delivered two assists and created two big chances, along with averaging 1.3 tackles, two shots on goal, 1.8 successful dribbles and 5.8 successful duels per game. He has shown that he offers a huge presence on the pitch and one which will be sorely missed when the team return to action in a couple of weeks’ time.
Klopp will have Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho to call upon in the meantime, but it might be worth considering adding some more depth to the wide forward positions in the January transfer window should the opportunity arise to do so.
With that being said, Diaz will surely be disappointed not to be able to help out his team as they navigate through their congested fixture schedule around the festive period, but the Liverpool manager will be hoping that he can rely on the rest of the squad to grind out important results.
